D. (Donald) R. Benson, editor at Pyramid, didn't solely favor de Camp's anthologies, but offered some of his own: THE UNKNOWN (Pyramid, 1963) which drew from UNKNOWN FANTASY FICTION/UNKNOWN WORLDS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unknown_(1963_anthology) and included the early Leiber F&GM story "The Bleak Shore", and THE UNKNOWN 5, which has less to offer us for this blog's purposes, but did publish, for the first time, an Asimov story that was in inventory when UNKNOWN WORLDS folded.
ReplyDeleteLeo Margulies' (ghost-edited?) WEIRD TALES (Pyramid 1964) included the at least peripheral "The Sea Witch" by Nictzin Dyalhis; WORLDS OF WEIRD followed in '65, with further documentation of Sam Moskowitz ghost-editing for Margulies, and another Dyalhis story of at least some relevance, and stories by Robert Howard and possibly Clark Ashton Smith likewise. https://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pl.cgi?55448
The June 1965 issue of THE MAGAZINE OF HORROR offered a reprint of Robert E. Howard's "Skulls in the Stars", a 1929 WT Solomon Kane story, among others cited by Darrell Schweitzer elsewhere which fall outside your state window here (I believe). http://www.philsp.com/homeville/fmi/k06/k06718.htm#A11
